More About

Between the chance for people to at last get up north for a weekend without freezing to death, and the upcoming onslaught of the Minnesota Fringe Festival, July is a slow month for Twin Cities theater. One of the annual highlights during this time is the Fresh Ink Series at the Illusion Theater, where a trio of new and in-development works get a weeklong staged tryout in downtown Minneapolis. This year features pieces from a prolific playwright, a popular 2012 Fringe entry, and an examination of life from a blind perspective. It opens with What I Thought I Saw: Random Acts of Blindness! (July 11-14) by Leslye Orr of St. Paul's Dreamland Arts. Orr is working with Illusion's Michael Robins. It is followed by the return of Fruit Fly from July 18-21, the Fringe show by Sheena Janson and Max Wojtanowicz about the relationship between a gay man and a straight woman. The play has been rewritten and expanded for Fresh Ink, and will feature Wojtanowicz and Cat Brindisi. Nikki Swoboda directs. Finally, July 25-28 sees the premiere of Jeffrey Hatcher's Hamlet. In it, playwright Hatcher — who has developed a number of shows via Fresh Ink over the years — recounts the experience of adapting, directing, and performing in Hamlet as a fifth-grader in Steubenville, Ohio, in the 1960s. Robbins directs the production. (Photo by Lauren B. Photography)
