Fendika

A troupe of dancers and musicians based in Addis Ababa, Fendika delve into a wide array of traditional material from throughout Ethiopia. This promises to be a roots-centric show featuring the core group: two dancers, a female singer, and musicians playing kebero (a two-headed Ethiopian drum), masenqo (a single-stringed fiddle) and krar (a five or six-stringed lyre). Fendika's founder and leader, Melaku Belay, is a master of many trad Ethiopian dance styles, but particularly eskista, which involves frenetic movements of isolated body parts. Eskista is said to be the inspiration for the Harlem Shake, and was performed by Beyoncé in her video for "Run the World (Girls)." The far more spare music of this ensemble is nonetheless rhythmically energetic with undulating, sinuous melodies accompanying spectacular dance moves.
