It'd be easy enough just to go over Beyonce Knowles's qualities and accomplishments as a 21st-century media superstar. She's got first-name recognition, one of the most fervent fan bases in pop and R&B, genuine power-couple status alongside Jay-Z, and a Super Bowl halftime show so over-the-top energetic that the only thing that could upstage it was the Superdome's lights conking out. Bey is showbiz to the core, and her concerts are known to be heavy on the spectacle. But it's not the costume changes and massive setpieces that get songs like "Crazy in Love," "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)," and "Countdown" wedged inside listeners' heads. It's that voice — one that ranks up there with Diana and Janet in its ability to mix emotional range with to-the-rafters vocal virtuosity and nail a decade-spanning soundtrack for millions. Oh yeah — and she can dance, too.
