When Dawes's debut, North Hills, was released in 2009, it was as if an artifact from the golden days of Southern California folk-rock had been unearthed in Laurel Canyon. The quartet's sharply rambling guitars, close vocal harmonies, hazy grooves, and literate, purposeful lyrics suggested a strong affinity for the likes of Crosby, Stills & Nash, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, and Jackson Browne. By the time it got around to album three, the band began to chafe a little at the retro references and so left L.A. and producer Jonathan Wilson for North Carolina and Jacquire King of Kings of Leon and Norah Jones fame. So April's Stories Don't End doesn't quite have the dusty, sepia-toned ambiance of the first two, but the SoCal vibe persists, especially Taylor Goldsmith's almost uncanny similarities to Browne, both in his vocal mannerisms and in his reflective, finely observed, adeptly crafted lyrics.
