Beginning in '77 and spanning the next decade and a half, Tom Petty could be counted on for a couple of hits a year, a pace not even heartland-rock peer Springsteen was matching. But among tales of refugees and Indiana towns sit a handful of albums more than worthy of your parents' CD rack — '79's Damn the Torpedoes, the one with "Refugee" and "Don't Do Me Like That" but also deeper cuts "Even the Losers" and "Shadow of a Doubt (A Complex Kid)," being the most notable. The Florida-founded six-piece isn't touring behind a new album for this leg, but that's almost a best-case scenario: That means more time for the band to have fun with deeper cuts from their back catalog, which stays stocked and tribute-worthy 10 years after the Strokes' "Last Nite," a blatant ripoff of '77's classic "American Girl." With the Smithereens.
