3019 1/2 Lyndale Ave. S.
Minneapolis, MN 55408
Category: Salons and Spas
Region: Uptown/ Eat Street
This Sunday, 20 blocks of Lyndale Avenue — one of Minneapolis's most hectic thoroughfares — will be shut down to cars, buses, and motorcyclists for six hours. From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. only bicyclists, skaters, and pedestrians will be allowed in the street for a party of people-powered transportation. Organized by the Minneapolis Bicycle Coalition, a volunteer-driven nonprofit that advocates for better bicycling throughout the city, Open Streets Minneapolis started in 2011, and has been hugely popular since. The event was inspired by Ciclovía, a weekly festival in Bogota, Colombia. During the day, there will be cool happenings up and down Lyndale, including a folding-bicycle race, a bike rodeo, a yoga class, and mini-golf, plus music, art installations, and informational booths. If you get hungry (biking all day does that), you'll find plenty of food at Hola Arepa, the Wedge, Pizza Luce, and French Meadow, among others. If you'd prefer to avoid the attractions, you can just pedal or pad the 20 blocks of Lyndale over and over. Minneapolis will host four Open Streets this summer: one along Central Avenue Northeast (July 28), one on Minnehaha Avenue (August 11), and one on Lowry Avenue North (September 21). St. Paul will be hosting its first Open Streets along University Avenue September 15. For more information, visit openstreetsmpls.com. (Image by Eric Shoultz)
