Josh Rouse

Always on the softer adult-alternative-leaning side of the indie-rock spectrum to begin with, veteran singer-songwriter Josh Rouse "rocks" gentler than ever on his 10th album proper, The Happiness Waltz. Now firmly ensconced in his 40s and a married father of two, the reedy tenor has a latest batch of songs that consists largely of low-key meditations on the trials and tribulations of attempting to simultaneously forge a fulfilling family life and a modest living as a working musician. In the wrong hands, such source material could come off as solipsistic and lazy, but Rouse has always had a knack for clever phrasing, and it helps that these mid-life ruminations are set to some of his most ingratiating melodies in years. Now a full-time resident in his wife's native Spain, Rouse wisely ditched the Mediterranean fixation that derailed his prior two albums to re-focus on the breezy '70s folk-rock sound that informed his most popular recordings in the early 2000s, including 2004's excellent Nashville.
