It's a great time to be Darryl Lenox. The Las Vegas native, by way of Vancouver, BC, had a critically acclaimed special debut late last year, and appeared on Conan and Marc Maron's WTF podcast. The special, Blind Ambition, deals a lot with Lenox's vision problems, and the surgery he underwent to correct it. "They didn't even have a number for my vision," he explains, "like 20/800. I could count fingers an inch from my face, and that was it." The surgery improved his sight to 20/40. "I still have glaucoma, so I have to manage that, but I've never seen things clearer or better in my life." He recently went back to his adopted homeland, where he was the keynote speaker for the Canadian National Institute for the Blind. "That was really an incredible opportunity," he says. And though he prefers living in New York City, he's still very fond of Canada and isn't afraid to say so. Some Canadians think he's joking, though. "I talk about it all the time when I'm up there, and every now and then somebody will want to know if I'm screwing with them. It's a weird inferiority complex." When not onstage, Lenox finds humor in the things going on around him, as opposed to TV or movies, and he can find funny situations anywhere in the country. "Nothing's funnier than being in, say, Duluth, and I hear people say, 'Did you hit a deer?' That regular, non-pretentious talking I find funnier than scripted comedy. That's what really makes me laugh." Also with Robert Baril. 18+.
