Electric is the prosaic title of Richard Thompson's new album. But it triggers uncontrollable salivating in anyone who has known Thompson going way back to his Fairport Convention days, because it can only mean he's firing up a signature ringing, Celtic-tinged fusillade from his trusty Stratocaster. And he doesn't disappoint, lacing searing electric licks through the opening "Stony Ground." Thompson opts for acoustic for the hungover reflection of the bittersweet "Salford Sunday" before cranking up the Strat again, ripping out rapier-sharp lines as menacing as the titular siren on "Sally B." Recorded at Buddy Miller's Nashville studio, Electric has a clarity of sound that makes Thompson's virtuoso picking even more riveting while unveiling the rogue's gallery of finely observed characters that make Thompson tales as richly nuanced as the finest short-story writers'. On tour, his Electric Trio will include bassist Taras Prodaniuk and drummer Michael Jerome. Opening is Wisconsin's Field Report, led by Chris Porterfield, who was in the same Eau Claire band — DeYarmond Edison — that produced Bon Iver and the Mountain Goats. (Photo by Pamela Littky)
