Grand Old Day

Summer street celebrations are now in full swing. And with the arrival of June comes Grand Old Day, the largest one-day festival in the Midwest. Things get started at 9:30 a.m., when the parade marches down Grand Avenue. Families can have fun throughout the day at three different locations. In the parking lot of Whole Foods kids can listen to live music or partake in Tae Kwon Do demonstrations. Ramsey Junior High will have a petting zoo, bounce houses, and face painting. Teens from the School of Rock will also perform music sets near Snelling Avenue. Grownups looking for more adult fun will certainly find it on six music stages. Acts slated to perform at various locations include the Melismatics, Orange Whip, White Iron Band, Night Moves, and headliner Har Mar Superstar (4 p.m. at Dixie's on Grand). Wristbands are $8, and get you into all the shows (but you must be 21 or older). Those looking for something a little more low-key may want to check out activities between Hamline and Lexington. Here, you'll find pro gardeners offering tips, experts talking about urban gardening, and other nature-based demonstrations. For more info, visit www.grandave.com. (Photo by Brandon Stengel)
