Back in 2006, the Elevator Repair Service brought Gatz to the Walker Art Center. The conceit was relatively simple: An office drone picks up a copy of The Great Gatsby, and starts to read aloud. Six hours later, the man and his office mates have read the entire novel aloud to the audience. The sensational show has gone on to tour the world, play a successful New York City run, and made all other attempts to render the story second-rate at best. The company makes its return to the Walker this week with Fondly, Collette Richland, created by the company with playwright Sibyl Kempson. Kempson has a long history with ERS, having collaborated with members of the group on a number of previous projects, and originating one of the roles in Gatz. Her own previous work includes the intriguingly titled Potatoes of August and The Secret Death of Puppets (or) How Do Puppets Die? (or) Puppets Die in Secret. This latest work — the first time ERS has worked with a contemporary writer — starts with a simple domestic scene that unravels before our eyes, turning into something stranger and darker.
