Tesla

Being remembered as the archetypical mad scientist probably wouldn't have pleased Nicola Tesla. The Serbian inventor, after all, revolutionized our core understanding of electrons, experimenting extensively on the way energy travels over vast distances. Tesla's groundbreaking research tends to be overshadowed by his eccentric personal life, obsessive pursuit of knowledge, and a lifelong enmity toward his rival inventor Thomas Edison. Though few dispute Tesla's genius, his reputation remains distorted by audacious claims that he required only two hours of consecutive sleep, had intercepted extraterrestrial communications, and was near completion on a directed energy weapon (dubbed a "death ray" by the press) capable of shooting down enemy aircraft with electrical waves. Within this cryptic mythos, the real Tesla has grown increasingly difficult to define. Undaunted by the challenge, the innovative talents at Nimbus Theatre have combed this historical record in search of the man behind the legend. The fascinating results of their investigation inform the world premiere their latest production, Tesla. Developed through a collaborative workshop process involving cast and crew, this Josh Cragun-directed premiere paints a portrait from numerous historic strands, including Tesla's own writings. The final result is a stage biography that cuts through the legend, reappraising a personality that defies the usual caricature. Like the subject, this theatrical experiment is geared to electrify audiences with thought-provoking originality. (Photo by Mathieu Lindquist)
