Few annual events are quite as core to the character of south Minneapolis as the In the Heart of the Beast's MayDay Parade and Festival. Now in its 39th year, the spring celebration draws on community volunteers to populate a river of papier-mâché, colorful cloth, jury-rigged floats, and musical instruments. The march winds down Bloomington Avenue, pooling beside Powderhorn Lake in an unruly swarm of unsupervised children, aging hippies, confused suburbanites, and crust-punk anarchists. A big party follows, with carnival food, booths, music, and an elaborate puppet-based ceremony. This year's theme is direct and environmental, emphasizing the benefits of caring for the Earth and the dangers of abusing it. When the festival was postponed last year due to bad weather, donations suffered from low attendance, so the parade's been scaled back a bit this year. But after this miserable spring, Minneapolis's exuberance (assuming there's even moderately tolerable weather for the big day) will likely make up for any deficit.
