As the prevalence of restaurants and obesity numbers indicate, Minnesotans love to eat. Maybe it is the long winters, when our brains tell us that we need some extra pounds to survive the cold. Or maybe we use casseroles and other dishes to break the ice at gatherings. Whatever the reason, the state's relationship with food is a pretty tight one, which makes a play centered on James Beard a natural. The jovial cook was the first televised superstar chef, sharing his culinary advice via the airwaves beginning in 1946. James Still's one-man show brings the action to 1984, just before Beard's death. The setup gives Beard (played by Ivey winner Garry Geiken) a chance to reflect back on his youth and career — all of which is punctuated by his deep and abiding love of food. There are some food-related events planned for the run. All tickets on Food Industry Night (April 29) are $15. Prior to the shows on May 11 and 12, culinary students from the Arts Institute International will do cooking demonstrations. Also, if you bring non-perishable food items for donation to Second Harvest Heartland, you will receive a free ticket to a Fresh Ink show this summer. In previews Thursday, April 25.
