More About

Get the true story of the late Augie Ratner, the boxer-turned-nightclub proprietor who owned Augie's Theater Lounge and Bar (where Augie's Bourbon Street Cabaret is now), this Thursday at Mill City Museum. In Augie's Secrets: The Minneapolis Mob and the King of the Hennepin Strip (Minnesota Historical Society Press), author Neal Karlen, Ratner's great-nephew, digs into the seedy details of downtown Minneapolis's underbelly along Hennepin Avenue around the mid-20th century. According to publicity materials, Ratner was "the unofficial mayor of Minneapolis's downtown strip in the 1940s and '50s." During that period, Augie's was located right in the middle of a stretch of pool halls, bars, and gambling establishments, and the former contender had the ear of everybody, including mobsters, artists, and other colorful characters. For tonight's illustrated presentation, there will be a cash bar opening up at 6 p.m. (Photo by Sarah Buckley)
