For all the renowned musical inventiveness embedded in the landmark albums of the mid 1960s, so-called "girl groups" of the era remained largely restricted to one sound. To most casual listeners, the very term "girl group" calls to mind an indistinct amalgamation of R&B/pop acts like the Shirelles, the Ronettes, and the Supremes. The presence of female rock 'n' rollers during this storied time has gone almost entirely ignored. Correcting decades of disregard, local playwright Carol Critchley's girl group gives center stage to the contributions of such trailblazers by following the career of the Furies, a fictional group of female musicians aspiring to break into the gender-segregated rock 'n' roll world. Facing a mindset that remains rampant in some quarters of the music industry, the Furies find that their formidable talent is a secondary consideration to making their image fit within a preordained mold. Directed by Stacey Poirier, the empowering storyline is amplified by a selection of original rock compositions co-written by Critchley and singer-songwriter Edie Rae Baumgart, and performed by the principal cast of Becka Linder, Katia Cardenas, Amanda Thomm, and Laura Mahler. For an era so frequently associated with social progress, the neglectful treatment of female musicians remains a glaring omission. If there's any justice, this latest production from Theatre Unbound will provide a long-awaited encore. (Photo by Scott Pakudaitis)
