Bernie Worrell should be considered an immortal for playing keyboards for every single year of the Parliament-Funkadelic mothership's untouchable '70s peak — thereby popularizing synthesized bass — then joining up with Talking Heads for "Burning Down the House" and the legendary live set Stop Making Sense. Since then, that funk-to-punk versatility continues paying off for Worrell, with side routes in Afrobeat, hip hop, and the jam band circuit. He's played with the prog-funk supergroup Colonel Claypool's Bucket of Bernie Brains, the rap-rock teamup with Mos Def and Living Colour's rhythm section as Black Jack Johnson, and the Baby Elephant project with hip-hop production icon Prince Paul. His current group, the Bernie Worrell Orchestra, is similarly flexible: while setlists reliably bring the goodies from Funkentelechy vs. the Placebo Syndrome and Speaking in Tongues, Bernie's also handy with old jazz standards and other left-field surprises.
