In Time, the first new studio album from the Mavericks in a decade, sounds timeless. Marrying vintage country and pop with a wide array of Latin threads, most prominently Tex-Mex, mariachi, and Cuban, it displays a stylish assurance. Raul Malo is once again at the heart of the band. Besides writing or co-writing all the tunes, his Roy Orbison-like operatic croon carries torchy '50s-ish ballads like "Forgive Me," jaunty Bakersfield/Austin romps like "Back in Your Arms Again," and rockers like "Lies" with equal aplomb. Seth Walker, a fine, bluesy singer, guitarist, songwriter, and sometimes Malo collaborator, will open.
