Sigur Rós is a band so singular that only a small number of adjectives will suffice when describing them. Over the past decade and a half, the Icelandic outfit has been conflating the best elements of post-rock and ambient music without ever fitting squarely into either genre, meanwhile penning mostly long songs, singing in a self-invented language called Vonlenska, and making use of virtually every instrument from here to Reykjavik. After test-driving bona fide pop structures with 2008's Með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust, the band reverted to more characteristic sprawl for last year's Valtari, a quieter record with only one earth-splitting crescendo. It didn't make the critical dent of 1999's Ágætis byrjun or 2005's Takk..., but then, any initial reception was probably misguided. This is a band that tends to make music best heard loud and in a spacious setting — in fewer words, in a place like the Roy.
