More About

Some of the brightest luminaries in Twin Cities theater are part of Misterman — though they are never seen onstage. Actor John Catron is joined by the recorded voices of Patrick Bailey, Bain Boehlke, Virginia Burke, Chris Carlson, Joe Dowling, Annie Enneking, Melissa Hart, Mark Rhein, and Cheryl Willis in this Frank Theatre production. Written by Enda Walsh, Misterman follows a lonely man in an abandoned warehouse as he relives key moments of his past through various recordings he has made. Walsh is one of the current crop of dark-souled Irish playwrights interested in exploring the depths of the human experience (and, interestingly enough, the Tony Award-winning book writer for the gentle musical Once). For Catron — most recently seen in Long Day's Journey into Night at the Guthrie and previous Frank shows Metamorphosis and By the Bog of Cats — the rehearsals have been about not just finding his character, but interacting with other actors who will never be in the room. He is guided by Frank founder Wendy Knox, and aided by the work of sound designer Michael Croswell (which included tracking down more than half a dozen functional reel-to-reel tape players) and set designer Michael Sommers from Open Eye Figure Theatre. The play certainly shares DNA with Samuel Beckett's classic one-act of a lonely man and his tape recordings, Krapp's Last Tape, but Walsh examines the role religion plays in the life of his evangelical main character.
