John Zorn is a multi-instrumentalist, renowned for his groundbreaking compositions and ferocious improvisations. To even scratch the surface of Zorn's stylistic stretch, it's necessary to cite jazz, funk, metal, klezmer, classical, punk, and cheesy film scores; but his inspiration seems to spring from virtually anywhere. This marathon celebration of Zorn's 60th birthday (five months premature) will feature six ensembles, drawing from an impressive cast of local (cellist Michelle Kinney, guitarist Chris Cunningham, keyboardist Joey Schad) and world-renowned musicians (including guitarist Marc Ribot, pianist John Medeski, percussionist Cyro Baptista, cellist Erik Friedlander). Three programs with the bands will be sandwiched between two free events: Things will get underway at 3 p.m. with a discussion between Zorn and the Walker's Philip Bither. At midnight, Zorn will do a solo organ performance (The Hermetic Organ) across the street from the Walker at St. Mark's Episcopal Cathedral. The paid programs (all in the Walker's McGuire Theater): Game Pieces at 4 p.m., Masada at 7 p.m., New Projects at 10 p.m. (Photo by Scott Irvine)
