In attempting an overview of political dissent, the lives at the center of the conflict are frequently neglected. Julia Alvarez's groundbreaking novel In the Time of the Butterflies was a memorial to such casualties, centering on the Mirabel sisters, four siblings who faced brutal repercussions for defying Rafael Trujillo, the tyrannical dictator who ruled the Dominican Republic for 30 years. Adapting the story for the stage, acclaimed playwright Caridad Svich has attempted to capture the price of speaking out. Using video projection and animation, Svich focuses on the inner struggle to choose resistance over complacency. Lending immediacy to the work, the 1950s setting is bound to the present day via a score that combines period music with contemporary reggaeton spun by a DJ. While a Spanish-language version of the work was debuted in New York, this Mixed Blood production marks an inaugural bilingual staging performed in English and Spanish. Directed by José Zayas, In the Time of the Butterflies delves into the personal cost of social progress. In previews April 4. (Image by Rich Ryan)
