Returning last spring from an eight-year "indefinite hiatus," Garbage essentially picked up where it left off: '90s-era, post-grunge alt-rock. That proved to be more a template than a formula on the comeback album Not Your Kind of People. The quartet's sound is still dark, muscular, turbulent, and honed to near-perfection. The band's allusions to losing control are illusions when it comes to the music, whose big hooks dangle just beneath the roiling guitars and electronics. Meanwhile, singer Shirley Manson delivers her sometimes topical ("Blood for Poppies"), angst-ridden lyrics with an impressive array of sneers, murmurs, and honeyed dissections (and on the title track, a psychedelic swoon). Io Echo is the L.A. duo of Ioanna Gika and Leopold Ross, whose sound has alternately been dubbed Grunge Goth and New Orientalism. 18+.
