On Parks and Recreation Aziz Ansari plays Tom Haverford, a clueless but well-intentioned entrepreneur with an endless supply of bad business ideas. In real life, Ansari obviously knows how to make smart career moves. After heading out to New York City for college, the South Carolina native performed as a regular at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre. From there, he went on to film a popular online series that eventually became a hit MTV sketch show, hosted the MTV movie awards, and starred in a variety of flicks, including Funny People and 30 Minutes or Less. His standup tends to focus on funny things happening in his everyday life, including the minutiae of social media, where he sometimes chats with people like Chris Rock and Kanye West. Ansari also has love for Minnesota: After reading an article about bullying in Rolling Stone last year, the standup, along with Nick Kroll and Hannibal Burress, performed two shows in L.A., raising $15,000 (a few grand of that was his own money) for Anoka-Hennepin LGBT group Justin's Gift.
