Shapiro & Smith Dance

With her latest work, the indomitable Joanie Smith has created a dance that dares to parse the character of Ophelia in Hamlet. Guest super-divas Judith Howard and Erin Thompson join Shapiro & Smith Dance artistic associate (and dynamite performer) Laura Selle Virtucio in this three-part madcap exploration of a woman on the verge of... love? Madness? Liberation from her dolorous history? All of the above? An original score by Scott Killian features famous female operatic duets. Smith tackles the man problem in "Jack," a duet for Scott Mettille and guest artist Nic Lincoln (an inspired pairing) that investigates various Jacks in nursery rhymes. The multi-gifted Brian Sostek has created a soundscape revealing the dark origins of those innocent, nimble Jacks who sit in corners and tumble down hills. Possible historical references include Louis XVI, who broke his crown on the guillotine, and Marie Antoinette, who came tumbling after. Repertory favorites getting a reprise include "A Moment Before" set to music by Rachmaninoff, and "Burning Air," a dance inferno based on the Great Hinckley Fire of 1894. (Photo by V. Paul Virtucio)
