On first look, Abraham Cruzvillegas's sculptures and installations have a Duchampian appeal with their incorporation of everyday objects. But on closer investigation, the work collected in "The Autoconstruccion Suites," the first mid-career exhibition for the Mexico City artist, has a dynamism that comes from his creative assemblage of materials. Cruzvillegas calls his process autoconstruccion, or "self-construction." His practice is based in the urban landscapes of his childhood, as well as the politics, economics, and social aspects of life in Latin America. He also makes room-size environments, film, video, and theater, examples of which are also in the show. In all of his work, he emphasizes handmade and crafted over manufactured and artistic. Here, this work comes together for the first time. Through his lens, viewers will see Mexico City anew. There will be a Walker After Hours party with live music by Malamanya, artscapes by Playatta, and appetizers and cocktails from 9 p.m. to midnight Friday, March 22 (tickets are $30).
