Thwarted by personal responsibilities and financial limitations, many would-be world travelers have reluctantly placed their international adventures on hold. There is, however, a better option for satisfying wanderlust than bitterly flipping through unused travel guides. Theater Latté Da, a local company that specializes in musicals staged with innovation, will be taking audiences on a journey to Florence, Italy, via passage on The Light in the Piazza. Developed by playwright Craig Lucas and composer/lyricist Adam Guettel, The Light in the Piazza was a hit of the 2005 Broadway season thanks to a singular score that applies bilingual lyrics (English and Italian) to a melodic fusion of classical, opera, and pop. The results lend heady romanticism to a storyline already steeped in amore. The narrative begins with a mother and her 26-year-old daughter on a European vacation, then a chance encounter with a young Italian man puts a detour in their path. Mutually smitten, the inexperienced daughter and her aspiring beau make plans to be together, only to have their hopes blocked by the deep-seated concerns of the girl's mother. Portraying the central characters is an impressive trio of performers lauded for their exquisitely expressive vocals: Kathleen Humphrey, Jessica Fredrickson, and Aleks Knezevich. Under the direction of Peter Rothstein, this production should prove to be an invigorating expedition. The show is in previews March 14-15. (Photo by George Byron Griffiths)
