Mathew Janczewski's ARENA Dances

Mathew Janczewski is into mashups. His spring concert scrambles "Ugly" (2007), his fashion-conscious work about breaking through surfaces and getting back to authentic human connections, with his rambunctious "Pop" (2009), and sets it to music by Alex Berglund that features a cast from the St. Paul Conservatory for Performing Artists. Janczewski, a luminous dancer who rarely performs with his youthful ARENA dancers these days, takes on the provocatively titled "shredded evidence/damn this wild young heart," a solo created in cahoots with Jane Shockley. His brand-new version promises improvisation by the nine ARENA dancers to music by Phil Fried. Don't let the lower-case titles fool you: Janczewski is a high-concept choreographer with one foot in lush abstract movement and the other in rampantly out-there pop culture. (Photo by Jake Armour)
