Hmong Bollywood

It's been quite a year for Hmong playwright Katie Ka Vang. A year ago, she was diagnosed with stage four anaplastic large T-cell lymphoma. Thankfully, her cancer is now in remission. This weekend, she will be performing a work she was commissioned to write for Pangea World Theater in 2008, and staged as a work-in-progress in 2010. Hmong Bollywood, presented as part of Pangea's Alternate Visions Program, depicts Vang's experience as a Hmong American trying to escape her struggles through the fantastical world of Bollywood. In the play, Vang talks about how she and her family spent hours watching Bollywood films when she was growing up, and explores how the form gives Hmong Americans a way of engaging in traditions different from their own. The one-woman show, directed by Meena Natarajan, utilizes creative nonfiction, broken prose, monologues, video installation, media art, Bollywood dance numbers, and choreography based on Vang's life.
