Zorongo Flamenco Dance Theatre

The great flamenco artist Susana di Palma has been creating works for decades about women who are vital, uncompromising, and "mad" in every sense of the word. Her new work, "Locas Mujeres y Mas/Mad Women and More," is in three sections. "Locas Mujeres/Madwomen" animates the poems of Chilean poet Gabriela Mistral. "Ida y Vuelta/Departure and Return" employs original music played live, naturally, by Pedro Cortés Jr., a Gypsy guitarist living in New York, and infuses New World cultures into traditional Spanish flamenco. Last, but far from least, "Pure Flamenco" showcases the traditional improvisation between dancers and musicians that makes flamenco such a vibrant art form. Dancers are Deborah Elias, the divine Colette Illarde, and di Palma who — thank all the godesses who watch over us — has not yet retired as she threatened to do several years ago. Musicians include Cortés (who will be releasing a new CD), violinist Gary Schulte, guitarist Tony Hauser, and vocalists Jesús Montoya and Barbara Martinez. A cast to die for. (Photo by Erik Saulitis)
