More About

A genuine titan of modern jazz, pianist McCoy Tyner solidified his legacy early on as a member of John Coltrane's groundbreaking '60s-era quartet. Over subsequent decades Tyner has become one of the most influential pianists of his era, his blues-based style characterized by percussive aggression, stormy clouds of chords juxtaposed by lyrical explorations, and harmonic sophistication. He remains a ferocious, inspired improviser, whether solo or accompanied by some of his longtime cohorts, as here. Joining Tyner will be bassist Gerald Cannon, alto saxophonist Gary Bartz, who sometimes seems to channel Coltrane, and drummer Francisco Mela, whose signature style reflects bop along with a measure of his Cuban roots.
