When considering the craft of printmaking and what it entails, heavy machinery, strong chemicals, and pricey materials may spring to mind. However, this isn't always the case. Artists interested in D.I.Y. printing, for example, often come up with alternative methods that allow them to create pieces on a budget and in limited space. They may use nontraditional techniques that allow them to work in their apartment, or share a smaller printing workshop with like-minded artists. This innovative world will be explored for the MMAA Project Space's latest show, "D.I.Y. Printing: Presses Not Required." Here, work from eight local collectives and 12 independent artists will be on display, as well as pieces from the Minnesota Museum of American Art's permanent collection. Also on exhibition will be a handful of zines from Minneapolis Community and Technical College's Library. Much like D.I.Y. print work, these self-published tracts are easily circulated and often political in theme. There will be an opening reception from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, March 7.
