Performance artist and avant-folk musician Cynthia Hopkins returns to the Walker Art Center this week for the Midwest debut of her latest work, This Clement World, a documentary-style multimedia performance that addresses climate change. Hopkins, whose previous showings at the museum include The Success of Failure (or, The Failure of Success) and Must Don't Whip 'Um, is known for her haunting voice and transportive music. For this work about the ecological crisis, she'll be teaming up with frequent collaborators director DJ Mendel and designer Jeff Sugg. Using footage from her journey to the Arctic Ocean on the Doorderlicht, a 100-year-old Dutch ship, Hopkins weaves together the narratives of characters from the past and the future: an American Indian woman murdered in the 1864 Sand Creek massacre, and an alien child from the not-too-distant future. Joining Hopkins will be a team of local musicians, including Balls cabaret/open mic founder Leslie Ball and accordion extraordinaire Karen Townsend. There will be a post-show artist's reception Thursday, a post-show Q&A with Hopkins Friday, and an audience discussion after the performance Saturday. (Photo by Ian Douglas)
Thursdays-Saturdays, 8 p.m. Starts: March 7. Continues through March 9, 2013
