More About

When asked by visitors how we tolerate the frigid winter months, Minnesotans can be counted upon to facetiously offer up alcohol as our snowbound coping mechanism. Behind the quip, however, sits the sad truth that addiction thrives in the isolation of winter. For that alone, Illusion Theater's production of Bill W. & Dr. Bob arrives at an ideal time. Penned by the husband-wife team of Stephen Bergman and Janet Surrey, the work dramatizes the real-life friendship forged between a stockbroker from New York and a surgeon from Ohio, two men who initially seem to have little in common apart from their mutual dependency on alcohol. Though their shared addiction has been the source of endless troubles, it's only after finding support in one another that either man can achieve sobriety. From these beginnings, Bill W. and Dr. Bob founded Alcoholics Anonymous on a belief that addiction can be most effectively overcome with the help of an empathetic community. Marking the third mounting of the work by Illusion Theater, this Michael Robins-directed production offers a substantially revised stage design and new music by Roberta Carlson. The talented cast, led by Jim Cunningham, Stephen D'Ambrose, Carolyn Pool, and Laura Esping, will no doubt evoke enough humor and humanity to remind audiences that even the harshest winters are made bearable by the company of fellow sufferers.
