More About

Back in 1987, after Millicent Hodson finished her reconstruction of Vaslav Nijinsky's formidable and controversial "Le Sacre du Printemps" alongside Ken Archer's reconstruction of Nicholas Roerich's original sets and costumes for the Joffrey Ballet, Northrop Dance presented the work. It was almost earth-shattering, with the choreography's pigeon-toed, flat-footed stomping underscored by the music's pulse-pounding urgency. Alas, no riot ensued, unlike when the historic tribal ballet — set to Igor Stravinsky's music — was debuted by Serge Diaghilev's Ballets Russes in 1913. This year marks the anniversary of that debut. Thus the Joffrey's touring the work once again. The U of M's Symphony Orchestra will perform Stravinsky's score. "Le Sacre" is not to be missed. Nor is another work on the Joffrey program, which also set traditional ballet on its ear when it premiered in 1987: William Forsythe's "In the Middle, Somewhat Elevated." Also on the program is a new work by Stanton Welch. (Photo by Herbert Migdoll)
