Take the square root of Sun Ra, multiply by Captain Beefheart cubed, add maybe a dash of Stockhausen, divide by the tangent of Frank Zappa, toss in whatever musical oddities are lurking behind the radiator, and you may start approaching the 40-year-old freak show that is the Residents. Dadaist provocateurs notoriously anonymous (until recently) behind their trademark eyeball-in-a-top-hat, the Residents nurture an utterly uncategorizable sound easily stretching the definition of avant-garde from free jazz to punk rock and far down their tributaries. Currently a trio, the group arrives on its 40th Anniversary Wonder of Weird tour promising nothing short of musical mayhem culled from every obtuse angle of its strange existence.
