Baauer was a figurehead for 2012's trend of weaving Southern gun-clap street-rap production tricks into bass music — a subgenre dubbed "trap." The Brooklynite's "Harlem Shake" (Mad Decent) was omnipresent in the kinds of circles that preferred ecstasy to vodka mixers as their club intoxicant of choice, and while its strengths were sourced cleanly from the same kinds of snare-rolling, bass-clobber techniques that made Lex Luger a soundsystem-stressing maestro, the authenticity question was never far behind. But if one co-sign can make all the difference, this should be a convincing one: Just Blaze (pictured) has made showcase beats for some of the most acclaimed and best-selling hip-hop albums of the century, from Jay-Z's The Blueprint ("Girls, Girls, Girls") to Kanye's Late Registration ("Touch the Sky") to Kendrick Lamar's good kid, m.A.A.d city ("Compton").
