Indie vets Yo La Tengo have dabbled in so many different sounds — light psychedelia, early-'60s pop, mambo, borderline No Wave — that it's amazing they're still finding ways to explore. With 13th album Fade, the Jersey-founded trio have released one of their most sonically rich efforts yet, with streaks of strings, horns, and acoustic-guitar passages bringing as much color to the record as there is on its arboreal cover. Frontman Ira Kaplan's calm yet charismatic vocals and the band's trademark gentle tempos remain intact, however, so the 46-minute LP always has its roots in one of the more singular, consistently pleasing aesthetics of the 30 years since YLT's genesis. 18+.
