Of all the pleasures of the annual Minnesota Fringe Festival, none matches the thrill of stumbling upon a refreshingly original and unexpectedly moving work. In 2011, one show in particular was consistently singled out as having such an impact on audiences: Red Resurrected, a conceptual narrative by Isabel Nelson loosely modeled after the Little Red Riding Hood fable (and mixed seamlessly with aspects of Greek mythology and Mexican folklore). Such a perfunctory summary, however, gives little sense of the emotional charge evoked by the piece's adept storytelling (made all the more spellbinding by a minimalist set design that requires the performers to adopt various guises of the atmosphere). Drawing from traditional fables, Nelson's work explores the pitfalls of growing up through a young woman caught between the monotony of her childhood home and the mysteries awaiting her in the surrounding woods. Scored to traditional Appalachian music, Red Resurrected conjures a waking dream where the difference between reality and illusion is an irrelevant distinction. Transatlantic Love Affair, the troupe behind the earlier production, is remounting the show for the annual Lights Up series at Illusion Theater. The production features the direction of show creator (and recipient of the 2012 Award for Emerging Artist) Nelson and the original ensemble cast (including Adelin Phelps in a standout performance as Red), so audiences can anticipate a return journey to a world both thrillingly unknown and achingly familiar.
