More About

The genesis of the Twin Cities' singular "downtown" dance scene can be traced back at least to Hijack. The duo — Kristin Van Loon and Arwen Wilder — planted post-modern concerns with movement and performance into a largely ballet-and-modern-dance-oriented community, where their influence has been profound. In addition to attracting the attention (and admiration) of New York performers and critics, and cross-pollinating with like-minded movement artists from around the globe, the scene has cultivated and nurtured local talent. Chris Schlichting, who by day advises undergraduates in the U of M's College of Design, is one of them. He generated "Matching Drapes," which he describes in part as "new work that lives between presentational dance and more awkward and intimate everyday gesture," in collaboration with performers Mary Ann Bradley, Krista Langberg, Dustin Maxwell, Laura Selle Virtucio, and Max Wirsing. Artist Terrence Payne created the visual elements. (Photo by Otto Ramstad)
