Renowned Roots associate and soul-music maestro Cody ChesnuTT released his debut stunner double album, The Headphone Masterpiece, back in 2002, and spent the better part of a decade readying the follow-up. Despite its epic gestation time, Landing on a Hundred feels remarkably fresh and alive, and the passage of time did nothing to shrink the scope of ChesnuTT's always outsized musical ambitions. A throwback to bar-raising soul platters like Marvin Gaye's What's Going On and Curtis Mayfield's Roots, Hundred sees ChesnuTT deftly alternating between uplifiting personal anthems ("Til I Met Thee") and ferociously funky message-oriented material ("Under the Spell of the Handout"). All of the tunes benefit from boisterous brass and sweeping string arrangements, and the 45-year-old ChesnuTT's spine-tingling singing voice is thankfully showing no signs of losing its booming power.
