In a blast from the past, this group exhibition — in two locations on the U of M's West Bank — revisits the feminist art movement of the 1970s. While the show also reflects on how the more than 50 artists included (from Judy Chicago and Miriam Schapiro to our own Harriet Bart and Valerie Frank) changed the making, viewing, and understanding of contemporary art, it also points to the ways in which those artists shaped a cultural future. There's no question that as these women made art they also made history, often inciting controversy and instigating unprecedented discourse in the process. Like the suffragettes who fought for the right to vote, the women in this exhibition expanded the parameters of artistic expression for present and future generations of artists. There will be an opening reception from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, January 24, featuring a talk with artist Harmony Hammond earlier at 5 p.m. There will also be a public panel on the founding of Women's Art Resources of Minnesota (WARM) and future feminist art networks at 7 p.m. Thursday, January 31, and a related talk, titled "Researching Feminist Art: Then and Now," at 4 p m.
