Steve White is keeping busy. He just finished work on a new film by Robert Townsend called Playin’ For Love, due out later this year. Now he’s back on the road telling jokes. “Anything from the fiscal cliff to gun control,” he says, though he points out that he likes his current-events material to be relatable to more evergreen topics. “How long can you tell a fiscal cliff joke? Two weeks? The Lance Armstrong thing I can parlay into human behavior, and how we treat heroes.” He may even use it as a springboard to examine historical figures and events. “If Twitter had been going on when Mother Theresa was around, people would have been on there saying ‘I can’t believe that bitch!’” White isn’t afraid to work things out while he’s performing, either. “That’s what happens when you hit the stage things come out in the moment,” he explains. “I might have tripped over something there. It’s a whole different neurology when you’re onstage.” Influenced early on by Richard Pryor, White would like to wind up with a career like one of his hero’s contemporaries. “Dip Robin Williams in milk chocolate and take about 40 years off his life,” he says, “and you got Steve White. Standup, Dead Poet Society, The Fisher King. No complaints. Maybe some tennis and some yoga. Maybe a round of golf.”
