More About

Eclecticism was a hallmark of electrifying singer Kelly Hogan's career from her early days, when the Georgia native experimented with the Jody Grind's loungy jazz/pop/country/alt-rock hybrid and the quirky garage sounds of Rock*A*Teens. Subsequently, she moved to Chicago, released solo albums around the turn of the century, and was a backup singer with Neko Case. Last summer, Hogan released I Like To Keep Myself in Pain, her first solo album in over a decade. Featuring striking interpretations of Vic Chesnutt, Jon Langford, Stephin Merritt, M. Ward, and Andrew Bird, Pain also sports a virtual dream band that includes soul icons Booker T. Jones and James Gadson, guitarist Scott Ligon and Dap-Kings bassist Gabriel Roth. But it's Hogan's siren-like voice and emotionally riveting, genre-leaping flair that stand out, creating rare syntheses of country, rock, soul, blues, and pop. (Photo by Neko Case)
