Even if 89.3 the Current spins a few artists like Mumford & Sons and Adele that aren't starved for airplay, it's one of the half-dozen or so noncommercial radio stations keeping American airwaves vital. The station's laudable support of local artists is on full display for this weekend's two-night stand at First Avenue. Each night aims for maximum demographic-spanning appeal. Friday features fresh-faced folk-pop acts such as John Mark Nelson and Chastity Brown alongside established rockers the 4onthefloor and veteran musicians of the Twin Cities Funk & Soul All-Stars, who got their start in the 1970s. Saturday includes Picked-to-Click winners the Chalice, surging shoegazers Now, Now, and Dave Pirner of Soul Asylum alongside arguably the biggest draw of the whole weekend, Cloud Cult (pictured). The famously eco-minded pysch-pop group will be playing their first Twin Cities shows since July 2011 and presumably showcasing material from Love, their ninth album, due out in March. 18+.
