New Orleans icon Aaron Neville returns for a rare duo performance with keyboardist Michael Goods just a few days before the release of his hotly anticipated new doo-wop album, My True Story. Much of the hoopla is because it's Neville's first album on Blue Note in addition to being co-produced by Don Was and Keith Richards, who also plays guitar on it. It's also a great album, an obvious labor of love for Neville, who revisits many of the doo-wop classics that were his early inspiration as he honed his utterly inimitable voice. That magical instrument flutters through such nuggets as Little Anthony and the Imperials' "Tears on My Pillow," the Drifters' "Under The Boardwalk," Hank Ballard and the Midnighters' "Work With Me Annie," and the Ronettes' "Be My Baby," all aquiver with Neville's unique gossamer touch, subtle Crescent City elements, some distinctive guitar, and even a little vocal help from a handful of doo-wop originators.
