James Adomian

There's nothing funnier than a good impression, and nothing worse than a bad one. "Oh, I don't know about nothing," replies comedian and impressionist James Adomian, "there's warfare and all that." The veteran standup is widely known for his send-ups of Paul Giamatti, George W. Bush, Gary Busey, and Jesse Ventura, to name but a few. He even mimics fellow comics like Todd Glass, Andy Kindler, and Eddie Pepitone. "If I'm on a show with one of those guys, I'm definitely doing an impression of them. I've learned a lot from guys who are big, energetic performers onstage. That's definitely the style of comedy I was always drawn to." Adomian started out in sketch, but found there was more freedom in standup. "There's better name recognition if you're doing standup comedy than if you're doing sketch," he says. There's also a ceiling of sorts in sketch. "There's one TV show, and if you don't get on it, you're doing sketch live in a theater somewhere." It's not all impressions, though, as he performs part of his set as himself, something he finds refreshing. "I get to talk in my own voice sometimes, and from my own point of view. With a character, you're kind of locked into what their view is. It's nice to be able to speak as James Adomian and say, 'Hey, here are my actual opinions.'" 18+. (Photo by Luke Fontana)
