Looming as large as it does over local theater, the Guthrie is guaranteed to face scrutiny over its every creative decision. One initiative that's been difficult to criticize, however, is the theater's continuing partnership with the Acting Company, one of the country's most lauded touring companies. With past collaborations having provided some of the more memorable takes on Shakespeare in recent years, their latest venture can't help but carry the weight of heavy expectations. Rather than impressing through bombastic drama, however, the two companies have set their creative sights on one of the Bard's most refreshingly pastoral works, the romantic comedy As You Like It. A tale of love in exile, the piece is a sprightly ode to those eager to trade lives of passionless convention for feverish but unpredictable desires. In the work, this alluring place of escape can be found in the Forest of Arden, an untamed land that gives Shakespeare license to indulge in a variety of amorous entanglements, mistaken identities, and capricious wordplay. And while some critics contend that the work lacks gravitas, such gripes are missing the point. As You Like It is a celebration, one that stands to benefit from the restorative vitality of two companies whose unique alchemy seldom fails to stir a passionate response from the audience.
