24:00:00 Xtreme Theatre Smackdown

What happens when a piece of theater is written, cast, rehearsed, and performed within the span of 24 hours? Theatre Unbound's 24:00:00 Xtreme Theatre Smackdown festival answers this question while entertaining audiences. Each November, folks are invited to suggest theatrical elements, via the event's Facebook account, that they would like to see in productions. Then, in December, people vote online for things such as a line of dialogue, an emotion, a prop, or a stage direction. Winning elements are then required to show up in each of the event's six works. On Friday, two writers will pull an all-nighter, churning out performable pieces until 5 a.m. Then, at the butt-crack of dawn, directors and actors are assigned to each work. Finally, the casts rush forward with rehearsals until the curtain goes up Saturday evening. The resulting plays could crash and burn, turn out mind-blowingly awesome, or maybe be a head-spinning combination of the two. Regardless, the audience is encouraged to cheer performers on with rowdy glee. (Photo by Richard Fleischman)
