Call it the Nutcracker Effect, but there have been so many variations on Hans Christian Andersen's "The Little Match Girl" in recent holiday seasons that audiences could be forgiven for feeling exhausted with the material. But even those who have grown apathetic to the plight of Andersen's impoverished match girl will be gratified by the creative reinvention of Striking 12. Receiving its area premiere at Bloomington Civic Theatre's Black Box Theater, Striking 12 uses Andersen's tale as the inspirational starting point for a contemporary musical/concert revolving around a New Yorker whose seasonal disgruntlement is challenged by the intervention of an unexpected visitor. Like the main character, audiences will need all their cynicism to resist a captivating musical mélange that fuses elements from such varied genres as classical, jazz, and rock. This melodic eclecticism will come as no surprise to those familiar with GrooveLily, the intrepid band whose two principals, Brendan Milburn and Valerie Vigoda, created Striking 12 in collaboration with Tony Award-winning playwright Rachel Sheinkin. Stepping into the director's chair, Christine Weber will guide a multi-talented cast in which each performer serves double duty as an accompanying musician. A reinvigorating take on a classic theme, Striking 12 looks to strike a charitable chord in even the stingiest heart. (Photo by Vicki Madsen)
